Eye-opening venture for students
A GROUP of 30 Form Four students from SMK Taman Connaught displayed their business acumen in the 2009 ExxonMobil Young Entrepreneur (EYE) training programme when their newly set-up ‘company’ called SonnyBiz Enterprise raised over RM18,000 in a series of activities recently.
A business simulation activity, the EYE teaches students how to conduct business activities and transactions so as to increase their knowledge of how businesses are organised and operated.
In the process, the students learn how to set up a company and run the business, basic business principles and concepts as well as how to keep proper records.
Following the establishment of their company, SonnyBiz Enterprise employees put their new-found skills to work, swinging into action to organise a series of activities.
This included sales of fruit juices, floats, fried chicken, sushi and jelly mooncakes, all of which met with great response from the students.
The highlight was a fashion competition themed “Unleash” which SonnyBiz employees took only six weeks to organise.
Through concerted teamwork, SonnyBiz managed to get big boutiques such as POLO, Private Structure and VOIR (G&H) on board, publicised the event through The Star, distributed flyers and put up posters and banners to catch public attention.
Approximately 700 people showed up that evening including parents, students, former students, teachers and members of the public.
Federal Territory MCA Youth chief Chiew Lian Keng was the guest of honour. SMK Taman Connaught Parent-Teacher Association chairman Fuam Chin Keong was also present.
There was no shortage of volunteers to model the fashions and with training from professional models and make-up experts, the 52 student models put on a spectacular show that wowed the audience.
Various singing, face-changing and dancing performances also kept everyone entertained. At the end of the evening, the three models who topped the competition were Wong Git Yaen, Ng Sze Hsuan and Foong Li Li respectively.
SonnyBiz Enterprise subsequently made a donation from the funds raised to the Sunbeam children’s home in Cheras bringing along daily needs such as cooking oil, rice and biscuits.
During the visit, SonnyBiz employees pitched in to do household chores and played games together with the children.
